Recording Mixer

Recording Mixer
What does a Mixer, and Audio Interface mainly used for when using for recording at a studio, or at home?

So, Im thinking about starting a home studio. Starting from scratch, I know close to nothing about home studio recording and I’ve done a little bit of research. I wanted to ask someone who has already done music recording before and is aware of the equipement usage. So what does a mixer and audio interface conjunction used for? Why is it needed? What happens if you dont have an interface or mixer, or even both? Thanks in advance!

It really depends on what you need. I’ll give you some options:

A USB mic is the most simple way to record and it works great for many people. The USB mic plugs directly to the computer – that is all you need:

A USB interface allows you to connect a normal mic or two and an instrument (guitar, keyboard etc) to the interface which then connects to the computer via USB:

A regular mixer allows you to connect mics and instruments and mix those separate sounds down to one sound. You probably do not need a mixer unless you are going to record a band or several musicians at once. Regular mixers will still require you to have an interface to record to the computer. USB mixers have a USB interface built in – those are cool too.
