Key Piano
How can I fix a broken Piano key?

So I recently got a piano that a friend of mine gave away. A couple of the keys are stuck when I push on them; they only play when I lift them and push them back. How can I fix this problem without going to a professional? Please let me know. Thanks!

Take a look at this moving picture of an upright piano action in operation:

It’s rather complicated, to say the least. Most likely, the key will have to be removed in order to fix this problem. It might be the keyslip, a bushing, etc. Check to make sure the hammers aren’t touching each other. That’s the first thing you can do. You can also attempt to tighten the flange screw – but I don’t recommend it. Hold the hammer in place while you gently tighten this screw (it is at the lower end of the hammer shank).

Are you figuring out that this is a tough job, and that’s why there are professionals who make a living doing this?

You can try wiggling the key a bit. If that doesn’t do the trick, it would probably be best to call a professional. You need to have your piano tuned anyway, right?

If you are serious about piano playing then it might be best to have a professional technician look at your instrument from time to time (regardless of whether you think it is necessary).

Good Luck,
