What is the minimum dc working voltage for a capacitor that must drop 120 Vrms?
Vp = (120 Vrms) X (sq rt of 2) = 169.71 Volts
169.71 Volts is the maximum Voltage across the capacitor`s plates when 120Vrms sine wave is applied across the capacitor. Therefore 169.71V is the minimum Voltage rating for the capacitor that must be able to drop 120Vrms. The above allows no considerations for neither Voltage value nor capacitor value tolerances.
